Question
Map Sapling Learning The following is a multi-step reaction. The rate-limiting step is unimolecular, with A as the sole reactant. A+B C+ D If [A] and [B] are both 0.120 M, then the rate of reaction is 0.0090 M/s. (a) What is the rate of the reaction if [A] is doubled? Number M/s (b) Starting with the original concentrations, what is the rate of the reaction if [B] is doubled? Number M/s (c) Starting with the original concentrations, what is the rate of the reaction if [A] and [B] are both increased by a factor of four? Number M/s Previous Give Up & View Solution O Check AnswerNext Exit HintExplanation / Answer
Given reaction is A + B ---> C + D
Given rate determining step is a uni-molecular with A as a sole reactant.
So the order of the reaction is 1 and is with respect to A
So rate law is r = k[A] ---(1)
Given [A]=[B] = 0.120 M And r = 0.0090 M/s
Then (1) becomes 0.0090 M/s = k (0.120M)
k = 0.075 s-1
(a) when [A] is doubled the the new rate is r' = 0.075 s-1x[2x0.120M] = 0.018 M/s
So rate doubled
(b) Since the rate of the reaction will not depend upon the concentration of B , so doubling the concentration of B , the rate will not change.
So the rate is 0.0090 M/s
(c) when [A] and [B] are increased by factor four the the new rate is r' = 0.075 s-1x[4x0.120M] = 0.036 M/s
