Question

Please do not google this question and post the answer below, I am not understand the algebra in the answer below, and need this worked out with ay=4m/s^2

Answer this question below and note that ay=4m/s^2. Show all work and include free body diagram. 4. In the system given below ignore the friction and masses of the pulleys. If masses of X and Y are equal find the acceleration of the X?(g=10 m/s^2) Since force acting on X is double of force acting on Y, aX=2aY For X: 2T-10 m=m.a For Y: T-10m=m.2a a=2m/s^2

Explanation / Answer

For block X, the tension in the two ropes balanced with its weight. So, the net

force on the block X is,

            FX = 2T - mg

              ma = 2T -10m                ......(1)

For block Y, the tension in the strin is only balanced with the weight of the block.

The tension in the string is in upward direction and the weighht is in downward direction.

So, the net force on the block Y is,

             FY = mg - T

             2ma = 10m - T

Note: [this equation is not correct in your calculation, so its leads to wrong solution, in this case the weight and acceleration are in the downward direction]

Multiply the above equation with 2 on both sides.

            4ma = 20 m - 2T                      ......(2)

Add eq''(1) and (2), we get

               ma +4ma = 20 m - 10 m

               5ma = 10m

            a = 2 m/s2
