Question
Please do not google this and copy and paste. I posted this a couple of times last night and that's what everyone was doing.A box of mass M=500 kg hangs by a rope from a beam with dimensions a=2.0 m and b=3.0 m. The beam has mass m=85 kg. Find the tension T_c in the cable and the magnitude of the net force F exerted on the beam by the hinge. (Engineering firms usually need to calculate this to make sure that the beam is strong enough for a certain load).
Can u show me work?
I have my own answers but not sure if correct. Do we have to take into account the values of a and b? Can you show me work?
For T I have 4900 N. For second part I have two answers. 2866.5 and like 5900
I just need the second part. I have the tension.
Explanation / Answer
I don't think its too complicated. Im pretty sure that the dimensions of the beam is just extra un needed information. What you want to look at is the weight force so the masses are important. If you have a mass hanging from a string that is hanging from a beam then you know that the tention of that string is equal to the weight of the box attached to the string because the box itself is not accelerating because it is stationary. Once knowing it is stationary through drawing a free body diagram you can then solve for tension in the string which is simply the same as mass of the box *gravity which is also known as weight. This will give you something like ~5000 N (just an approximation you can use a calculator if you want). And for the hinge, the hinge is holding both the beam and the mass of the box so you know that the net force of the hinge is the weight of the beam + the weight of the box. So do the same thing and multiply the mass of the beam by gravity and get something like ~850N and then add the weight of the box which was ~5000N So the net force is ~5850 N
