Please answer question 1, 2, and 5 PRE-LAB PREPARATION SHEET FOR LAB 1-INTRODUCTION TO LIGHT (Due at the beginning of Lab 1) Read over Lab 1 and then answer the following questions about the procedures. 1. When is rav or geometrical optics generally applicable? 2. What is the meaning of light intensity? 3. What is your Prediction 1-1? The ews ity de reased with distan 4. How will Prediction 1-1 be tested? It is valid also a 1 power o as v ve with the light 5. In Activity 2-2, what is the original source of the light LAB 1: INTRODUCTION TO LIGHT

Explanation / Answer

1) Ray or Geometrical optics are applicable whenever the wavelength in the medium is small compared with the scale of the inhomogeneities and compared to the transverse dimensions of the optic beams to be transported.

Elementary results in general optics are applicable to free space, convensional thin lenses and lenselike media.

2) Intensity is the power transferred per unit area, where area is mesured on a plane perpendicular to the direction of propogation of the energy. , it has units watts per square metre (W/m2). It is used most frequently with waves (e.g. sound or light), in which case the average power transfer over one period of the wave is used. Intensity can be applied to other circumstances where energy is transferred.
