Question
Problem 8.21
The copper-nickel phase diagram. Copper and nickel have complete liquid solubility and complete solid solubility. Copper-nickel solid solutions melt over a range of temperatures rather than at a fixed temperature, as is the case for pure metals. Consider an alloy containing 70 wt % Ni and 30 wt % Cu (see Fig. 8.5). At 1350 degree C, make a phase analysis assuming equilibrium conditions. In the phase analysis, include the following: What phases are present? What is the chemical composition of each phase? What amount of each phase is present? Make a similar phase analysis at 1500 degree C. Sketch the microstructure of the alloy at each of these temperatures by using circular microscopic fields.Explanation / Answer
I am unable to paste picture here...so i am using this way... chk the solution here... https://skydrive.live.com/redir?resid=151CF3E9D06392D7!131 Ans : (a) i) The phases present are the liquid and solid (L + ?). ii) The chemical composition of liquid is wl = 62 wt % Ni while that of the solid is ws = 74 wt % Ni. iii) The weight percent of liquid and solid are: 33.33 % and 66.67 % respectively b) At 1500
