Question

I know I need to solve for time, and the answer is going to be rather large, but I keep getting it wrong. If someone can at least point me in the right direction (equation(s) needed to be used) I'd greatly appreciate it! Protons in a particle accelerator drop 1.1 micrometers over the 1.8 kilometers length of the accelerator. What is approximate average speed? I know I need to solve for time, and the answer is going to be rather large, but I keep getting it wrong. If someone can at least point me in the right direction (equation(s) needed to be used) I'd greatly appreciate it!

Explanation / Answer

drop is in y direction

y = 1/2 a t^2

t = sqrt(2*1.1E-6/9.81)=0.000474 s

so speed = 1.8E3/0.000474=3.80E6 m/s
