Physics 2140 Electric Field and Flux Homework Name Draw the net electric field vector with a dot. Hint: Think of the charges as horizontal positive/negative pairs, then use superposition. 2. at the three points marked 3. First a proton and later an electron are released from rest at the center of two equal and opposite linear charge distributions. Compare the electric force on the two charges. Are they equal or is one larger? Explain. a. b. Compare the accelerations of the two charges. Are they equal or is one larger? 4. The diameter of the circle equals the edge length of the square. They are in a uniform electric field. Is the electric flux through the square larger than, smaller than, or equal to the electric flux 2 through the circle? Explain. 5. Is the electric flux , through the circle larger than, smaller than, or equal to the electric flux 2 though the hemisphere?

Explanation / Answer

2) We know that electric field lines originates from positive charge and terminates on genative charge. For the given arrangement, considering the symmetry, the lines whill be parallel for the three dost begining at + and terminating at -.

3)(a)We know that an electric force is given by:

F = q E

Both the electron and the proton have same magnitude of charges on them(equal to the elementary charge = 1.6 x 10^-19 C)

So the magnitude of electric force acting on them as the charge on them is same.

b)We know that,

electric force = Fe = q E = ma

a = qE/m

As per the above expression of acceleration, the lighter particle will have more acceleration.

electron is lighter than proton and hence the acceleration of electron will be more than that of a proton.
