Question
Pls help me (it's psyc life span birth to death) I have an answer/feedback for these questions, can u please give me an answer by looking at the answer feedback.
In what sense can the history of adult intelligence testing be considered an evolution of scientific research? Write your answer in the space below.
Answer feedback: Your answer should include the idea of movement (like a pendulum) back and forth between two extremes. The early cross-sectional study results led to pessimism about cognitive losses during adulthood. When the pendulum swung too far toward pessimism, researchers began to wonder whether the method itself might be biasing the results. This skepticism led to longitudinal studies which yielded more optimistic results. Once again, when the pendulum swung too far in that direction, researchers began to realize that longitudinal studies had their own problems. Today, we have a more balanced view about aging, intelligence, and cognitive function, but we need to keep our minds open to the possibility that new research may change our perspective yet again.
Explanation / Answer
The scientific research on intelligence dates back over hundred years back. During that time the notion of intelligence was associated with scholastic achievement, which included mathematical operation skills, and verbal and non-verbal reasoning skills. It was considered that intelligence was static, and that after a certain age the ability to understand and comprehend concepts stopped and would start to decline. The notion of intelligence always swung between nature and nurture, for some argued it was genetics that had much influence on the intelligence, while some others favored factors of environment to be the determinants of intelligence. But, now we know that scholastic ability is a part of intelligence, know the role of nature and nurture in intelligence, and that intelligence is not static but a dynamic concept, that keeps on changing from birth to death. Still there is more to be studied and discovered about intelligence with newer perspectives and frames in the present time and the future.
