2. Recall a traumatic personal event, such as losing a loved one due to an accident or illness, receiving a rejection for an important job or school application, or failing an important assignment. Based on what you have learned in Chapter 4, discuss what has happened to you in terms of your cognitive reasoning, your emotional reactions, and your ability to logically deal with these stressful situations.
Explanation / Answer
I received a rejection for an important job in a renowned MNC that I was expecting for months. I was one of the potential candidates in the class and this was the first campus interview job. I passed the written test and got shortlisted for the group discussion. I passed the group discussion and called for the initial interview. Only 3 members were selected for the final interview to be held at the MNC premises. I was one among them. I prepared my resume and interview sessions seriously. After months, the interview call came and we went to attend the final interview at the MNC premises. I gave the interview to my satisfaction and was awaiting the results eagerly. After several months, I received the rejection and was stressed to the core affecting me badly.
According to Natalie Goldberg, Stress is referred to as an ignorant state of emergency forgetting to breathe and getting disconnected from the earth. On hearing the rejection, everything before me went blank. I cannot see and think anything. My cognitive reasoning failed and I could not remember anything. I felt that my brain had stopped working and I had lost my memory at that moment. The shock lasted for about five minutes and luckily I was in the classroom with friends consoling me and urging me to get ready for the next job.
My emotions were on high with a thirst for water. I was confused going wild and angry. I started withdrawing from others and preferred to stay alone. I cannot face the failure and this change in my speech and often emotional outbursts occurred. I used to worry constantly and was unable to focus on the daily proceedings. I showed my anger on my family members especially my parents on failing the interview.
My logical thinking helped me understand that there are various options available. Many new opportunities and job offers are coming in the next week and I can perform well in those company interviews to get selected. I was able to think logically and deal with my stress. This was my first failure and I understood that to succeed, one has to face many failures in life. I made up my mind and overcome the failure by treating it as the stepping stone for my success. My logical mind made me think rationally and come out of the stress situation. This stress for rejection of an expected job in an MNC lasted for a few days until the call for next job interview came.
