Question
Subject: Diversity, Personality and Values
Diversity is essential to organizations for multiple different reasons. Diversity allows for acceptance in individuals and within the workplace. When I think of diversity, I automatically think about multiple different personalities and individuals coming together with acceptance. Diversity also allows for positive performance, comfortability and confidence from each employee. Currently, I work for a company that prides themselves in diversity however, I’ve worked for company’s that have discriminated against myself and others based on their opinions. Since I have experience in both, this has allowed me to really understand the importance and impact diversity has.
Each and every one of us has individual differences that make us who we are. These differences may be based through physical appearances such as race, sex, age and abilities. Aside from the physical, there are deeper differences that are diverse such as personalities, values and overall attitude.
What values do you expect fellow employees to demonstrate in the workplace?
What differences do you expect?
Overall values that I personally expect from fellow employees to demonstrate in the workplace would start with empathy. Empathy is a value that gives an individual the ability to understand without exactly being in another persons shoes. Empathy allows for cooperation. For example; I deal with a lot of anxiety and sometimes that is being brought into the work place which hinders my composure. I would need others around me to have empathy for me and not discriminate my ability to work.
Another value that has a high expectation coming from my fellow employees would be to treat others fairly and respectfully despite any differences or challenges someone else may be facing. At my current job, we have multiple employees who have disabilities of different kinds, have come out with their sexual orientation, have came from different racial backgrounds, and have mental health challenges. With that being said, those characteristics have not once hindered their relationship with the organization and those who work with them. Each and every one of us may interact, respond and or function differently based on our own personal and cultural values but those differences make us who we are and allow us to bring something new and exciting to the table.
What will you do to promote an ethical and diverse workforce?
Why will this be helpful to you and your organization?
I’m going to use a personal example of a coworker of mine who is bound to a wheelchair based on his medical condition. Our leadership team prior to hiring him, not once discriminated him based on his medical condition or felt he may not be the the right fit for the company. He is in fact, one of the most knowledgeable individuals I’ve ever met. There are times where I’ve bumped into him and got frustrated or have had coworkers and myself ever so slightly doubted his ability to do the same functions as our other coworkers. Personally, I have made an effort to not only try to understand him as an individual but judge his work efforts based on his work efforts only. Leading by example is how I have been able to demonstrate this. Having fairness and respect of the individual while providing constructive feedback with positive intent only for the purpose of the work environment is not only ethical but it creates a positive environment.
How might the current political values climate influence the workplace and your role as manager?
What role does personality play in your workplace?
If the political values and climate influence opinions are different from the organization’s than that might affect your ability as a manager and then create a disconnect. However, these values don’t necessarily need to be fully aligned but if you’re representing the company you’re also representing its culture and values. When it comes to my personality, theres multiples different aspects that play a role in the workplace. I have ADHD and Anxiety and those aspects can sometimes get in the way of my composure and retention skills. However, I do have the ability to multi-task, hyper focus, have creative out of the box problem solving and I have the ability to feel empathy and compassion towards my customers. I feel as if my personality brings a good balance to the company.

Explanation / Answer
In the above post the key term that has been used is empathy. In all the mentioned questions various scenarios and workplace conditions have been described. There is discussion on fairness and being just with coworkers. Whenever we think about diversity and inclusion in workplace, we often think about the phrase “treat others as you like to be treated”. This is derived from Matthew 7:12 and this often forms the basis for diversity, personality and values.
However, this is not necessarily correct principle to follow. We should not treat others as we like to be treated. We should treat others as they like to be treated. In the first set of question, the response about the anxiety shows that the writer wants his coworkers to have empathy towards him. While this may work for him other may perform better under constructive criticism and welcome such advances. Our empathy should not be a generalized concept of being nice to others. Empathy should also incorporate what others value. Standing a personal standpoint it is often difficult to understand but if we open communication with people with different backgrounds, we may see that treating others with respect may have a different definition among different types of people. We need to consider this when we are at a workplace to promote a healthy work environment. The first step in inclusion is to identify and acknowledge differences in diversity, personality and values. Not merely treating everyone the same. That is equality but not exactly justice.
