I have to write a 7 page analysis paper on Leadership. I have chosen the topic Ethical Leadership but I am still struggling to get it going. What would be a good starting point for this topic? Some of the areas I wish to write about are: Ethics in business, How ethics relates to leadership, Characteristics of an ethical leader, Values and morals. I am also struggling to find acceptable sources. I am required to only use newspaper articles, peer reviewed journals and my textbook. I currently do not have access to the online portion of my school library but hope to be able to get into it tomorrow to find sources that fit the requirements and my topic.
Explanation / Answer
Ethical leadership influences others through and individual’s principles, values and beliefs as what one defines as their personal right behaviors. An individual’s leadership derives from their concepts of trust, consideration, honesty and viewpoint of fairness. Leaders naturallyselectethical, sound decisions and that inspire individuals to achievesuccess. Leaders create and triumph tough goals, while being able to make rapid and vitaljudgmentsas they are presented with ethical challenging situations. Effective leaders surpassopponents while taking risks while perseveringwhen confronted with failure. To be an effective ethical leader one must possess solid communication skills, self-assurance, ethical decision making skills along with the capabilityof managing others. A willingness to embrace variation are also characteristics of an effective ethical leader. This paper will synthesis common themes throughout three articleswhile providing a deeper understanding and a supposition of the articlesas a whole. The following articles are being presented: Article 1: Measuring and differentiating perceptions of supervisor and top leader ethics by J. Kottke and K. Pelletier.Article 2: Impact of personal growth projects on leadership identity development by S. F. Odom, B. L. Boyd, and J. Williams. Article 3: Leadership Styles and Associated Personality Traits: Support for the Conceptualization of Transactional and Transformational Leadership by R. Van Eeden, F. Cilliers, and V. Van Deventer.
Article 1 Theme
Kottle et al (2013) reported outcomes of two studies pertaining to the observations of supervisor and top leader ethics. In the first study it was discovered that using the Perceptions of Ethical Leadership Scale could be utilized to differentiate the perceptions of top leader ethics and supervisors. The second study included a different sample examining relationships between individual employees’ perceptions of their administration. The results from both studies painted the view that employees viewed their top managers and supervisors ethics directly related to the climate, leader direction, and along with organizational commitment. It is evident that leader ethics within top and immediate administration levels has a critical impact on the employees. The limitations included data collected was cross-sectional and analyzed using correlating statistics that could not denote causation.

Odom et al (2012), examine the work load of assignments completed by leadership instructors that aid them in discovering strategies to help students develop their ethical leadership skills. Taking a keen and critical view of the results from the Personal Growth Project (PGP) assessments that are completed by leadership educators during their college experience. It was concluded that precise ethical personality traits were linked with certainethical leadership traits amongst the management team. Empirical sources supported the study and it was reported that transformational leadership style predominantlyaligned with individuals who tended to have more interpersonal characteristics that highlightedthe importance of social along with work ethics in the place of work. There is a comprehensive look at the active along with passive leadership skills. The study reported one limitation was mainly the study contains too small of a sample utilized along with the direct environment of the conduct group.
Conclusion
The articles intertwined the mutual theme is the significance of ethical leadership containingindividual growth and the ethical personality traits which influenceaperson’s leadership skills. Leadership aptitudearises from the individual’s depths of intelligence alongside with aspiration to achieve greatness. While there are some who are perceived as “natural born leaders”, there are other types who tend to learn from diverse experiences they have been subjected to. Every individual’s personality type has a direct effect on their ethical leadership growth. For example it is discussed in article 1 the climate and the leadership of administration impacts individuals greatly. Within article 2 the focus is centered upon improvement of self-awareness and self-assurancewhich develops in the learning process of new skills. In article 3 it was stressed that a variety of characteristics within diverseadministration styles and their implementation of leadership. The association is substantial when considering the various roles that diverse characters exhibit within ethical leadership.When viewing these articles as a whole with one voice they explore and define how various personality stylesunswervinglyimpactethical leadership alongside their ability.
