Explanation / Answer
1. Situation audit: The current system for safety is very weak in the organization and has to be strengthened. The organization has a culture of poor safety and this has percolated down to many employees. Employees are casual about the safety aspect. The company has a weak policy towards safety standards.
2. Problem/decision statement: The main problem is the weak policy of the safety standards. As the company is operating in a dangerous industry, it needs to put in place robust safey standards. Another problem is the absence of proper regulations to support the safety standards.
3. The alternative is to introduce proper safety standards which should be supported by proper regulations. A culture supporting safety should be developed throughout the organization.
4. The critical issues to evaluate the alternatives will be to determine which standards will increase the safety to the optimal level. As the industry itself is dangerous, each and every constraint of all the alternatives will have to be evaluated carefully. Secondly, ease of application will also have to be evaluated of each alternative.
5. Analysis: The safety condition is poor in Forest International due to a combination of several factors - (i) absence of a culture of safety in the company (ii) management's indifferent attitude (iii) lack of proper safety standards.
6. Recommendations: Firstly, the management will have to change its attitude and start taking the issue of safety seriously. Once this happens, the importance of safety at workplace will percolate down to all employees. The commitment of both the managers and the employees will see the implementation of proper safety regulations and will improve the culture of Forest International, making it more pro-active with regards to safety.
