1Q). Cancer is the uncontrolled proliferation of cells, in which the process of cell division and death are not under normal regulation. Cancer cells do not become functionally mature, but they simply proliferate and drag nutrition from the surrounding cells. Mutations that cause activation of proto-oncogenes or inactivation of tumour suppressor genes are the common causes of cancer.

Proto-oncogenes are the inactive form of oncogenes, which will be converted into the oncogene under the favourable conditions like exposure to radiation, certain chemicals and environmental conditions. Tumour suppressor genes (or also called as anti-oncogenes) synthesise the proteins that generally inhibit the cell division and induce apoptosis. The mutation of tumour suppressor genes is involved in the pathogenesis of many cancers.
