Question

The diagram below shows a cross section across Lake Michigan. It is wintertime. Air temperature is -25°C (-13°F) and the water temperature is 1°C (34°F). The wind is from the west and a lake effect snowstorm is in progress. 1. The statements below each apply to a location indicated by one of the black dots on the diagram. Questions 25 to 28 are based on this information LAND East 25. Convergence occur at this location (a) D (b) A (c) B (d) E (e) C 26. Divergence occur at this location (a) A (b) B (d) D (e) E 27. Air is descending and skies are generally clear at this location (a) A (b) B (c) C (d) D (e) E 28. Air is ascending and heavy snow is falling at this location (a) A (b) B (c) C (d) D (e) E

Explanation / Answer

When cold air (-25C) moves over the warm lake(1 C), it is heated up by the warmer lake water and hence it receives more moisture from the lake evaporation. As a result,y the air in te immediate vicinity of the lake surface is heated up.
Surface friction is smaller over lake than over land surface friction is smaller over lake than over land which causes air to move faster over lake Air moves faster over lake.

Thus divergence of air is produce on the upwind side of the lake and convergence is produced on the downwind side of the lake. Due to the divergence, descending occurs on the upwind side and produce clear sky.

And now looking at the answer
25) As discussed above Convergence will occur at point E.
26) Divergence will occur at point C.

27) Descending air and clear sky will be at point A.
28)Acending and Heavy snowfall is at point B.

Above the warming surface layer, air remains cold, a condition leads to rapid destabilization which is point D.
