Problem 8.36 Part A A sample of argon gas has a volume of 755 mL at a pressure of 1.34 atm and a temperature of 144 What is the volume of the gas in milliliters when the pressure and temperature of the gas sample are changed to 640 mmHg and 285 K, if the amount of gas remains the same? Vi= mL Submit My Answers Give Up Part B What is the volume of the gas in milliliters when the pressure and temperature of the gas sample are changed to 0.500 atm and 76 °C, if the amount of gas remains the same? mL Submit My Answers Give Up Part C What is the volume of the gas in milliliters when the pressure and temperature of the gas sample are changed to 17.2 atm and -24 °C, if the amount of gas remains the same?

Explanation / Answer

A)

Initial conditions of gas:

Pressure P1 = 1.34 atm

Volume V1 = 755 mL

Temperature T1 = 144 oC = 144 + 273 K = 417 K

Final conditions of gas:

Pressure P2 = 640 mmHg = 640/760 atm = 0.842 atm

Volume V2 = ? L

Temperature T2 = 285 K

We know that P1V1/T1 = P2V2/T2

                       V2 = (P1V1/T1) (T2/P2)

                           = ( 1.34 atm x 755 mL/ 417 K ) ( 285 K/ 0.842 atm)

                          = 821 mL

                     V2 = 821 mL

Therefore, volume of the gas at 285 K and 640 mmHg = 821 mL
