Please help.

Define the following terms: salt bridge, anode, cathode, galvanic cell. 2. Arrange the following compounds in the order of increasing K_sp: AgCl. AgBr. Agl. Explain your reasoning. 3. Calculate the potential of the following concentration cell at 25.0 degree C. Ag | Ag*(1.00 times 10^-3 M) || Ag^+(0.100 M) | Ag Identify the anode and the cathode in the cell. 1 low would the cell potential change if the concentrations of Ag' in both half-cells were doubled ? Use the N'ernst equation to support your answer.4. Calculate the unknown concentration of Ag^+ if the potential of the following concentration cell is 300 mV at 25.0 degree C. Ag | Ag^+ (unknown) || Ag^+ (0.100 M) | Ag 5. Explain why ammonium nitrate was chosen as the salt bridge electrolyte in our experiment.

Explanation / Answer

1.

Salt Bridge - A salt bridge is a device used to connect the oxidation and reduction half-cells of a galvanic cell. It maintains electrical neutrality within the internal circuit, preventing the cell from rapidly running its reaction to equilibrium.

Anode - An anode is an electrode through which conventional current flows into a polarized electrical device.

Cathode - A cathode is the electrode from which a conventional current leaves a polarized electrical device.

Galvanic Cell - A galvanic cell is an electrochemical cell that derives electrical energy from spontaneous redox reactions taking place within the cell.

2.

Ksp of AgCl = 1.8×10–10

Ksp of AgBr = 5.0×10–13

Ksp of AgI = 8.5×10–17

AgCl>AgBr>AgI

Ag is a large sized molecule with a high molecular mass and radius. As we go down the group in a periodic table, we observe that the atomic radius generally increases. A large molecule has a better interaction with another large molecule, and hence will not dissociate easily, let alone be soluble in another liquid forming new hydromolecular bonds. Thus the solubility of Ag with halogens decreases down the group.
